He is the son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of United Arab Emirates, himself the emir of Abu Dhabi. He is the half brother of the emir and President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He was the chairman of (Abu Dhabi's) Seaports Department.
